The Normandie Hotel Project has been presented as the restoration of the historic hotel but it is not limited to the existing building's footprint and constitutes a substantial intervention in a coastal area that is of high ecological, historical, and cultural value. This project looks to double the hotel's area into public land in the Third Millennium Park (Escambrón). The Municipality of San Juan and its mayor, Miguel Romero, in a contract with The Normandie, OZ, LLC, are leasing public land to the hotel for 30 years (subject to extension), which effectively constitutes an irreversible privatization of public land of the people of Puerto Rico.
All of this is at an exorbitant cost to our people, benefiting only the hotel's private interests. We owe it to nature, the protection of the coastal zone, and future generations to fight this.
